President Donald Trump honored three US Army soldiers with the Medal of Honor at the White House in Washington. This is the highest award given to a soldier in the United States for great bravery during war. Two of the soldiers received this award after their death.
The ceremony was held in the East Room of the White House. Family members of the soldiers were present and it was an emotional moment for them. Many senior military officers and guests also attended the program.
The Medal of Honor is given by the US President in the name of Congress. It is awarded only to soldiers who show extreme courage during combat and risk their own lives to save others. Very few soldiers receive this highest honor.
The first soldier, Terry P. Richardson, was honored for his bravery during the Vietnam War in 1968. He was leading a mission when his team came under heavy enemy fire. Even in danger, he rescued injured soldiers and continued the operation.
He directed air attacks on enemy positions for many hours, even after he was wounded by a sniper. His brave action helped save the lives of 85 fellow soldiers. He also refused medical treatment so he could stay with his team.
The second soldier, Michael H. Ollis, was honored for his action in Afghanistan in 2013. During an attack on his army base, he helped his fellow soldiers move to safety. After that, he went back to check if anyone was left behind.
He found a wounded officer and stood in front of him when an attacker came close. The attacker exploded a suicide vest, and Ollis lost his life while protecting the officer. He was only 24 years old at that time.
The third soldier, Roderick W. Edmonds, was honored for his courage during World War II. He was a prisoner of war in Germany in 1945 and was the senior American soldier in the camp. He showed leadership during a very difficult time.
German officers ordered only Jewish-American soldiers to come forward for roll call. Edmonds told all American soldiers to stand together and said, “We are all Jews here.” Because of his stand, around 200 soldiers were saved.
During the ceremony, President Trump also spoke about his decision to take action against Iran. He said the action was needed to stop Iran from becoming a future threat. He also talked about immigration and national security.
The main purpose of the event was to honor the bravery and sacrifice of these three soldiers. Their stories show courage, leadership, and love for their country. The ceremony ended with respect and pride for these real heroes.
